One of the most important events in world history, the 16th-century Reformation tore apart the Christian world, splintering Catholic Europe and creating a new faith: Protestantism. Yet, as Dr Kathleen Chater explains in her new book, this seismic movement had relatively low-key beginnings: in 1517 a German monk, Martin Luther, merely thought there was room for improvement in the Roman Catholic church to which he belonged. Instead, he discovered he had founded a new religion.
