Daily History Byte: Booklet believed to contain world’s oldest copy of ‘Silent Night’ discovered in Vienna

The possible oldest extant copy of the Christmas carolĀ Silent Night was discovered in Vienna in a booklet called Four Beautiful New Christmas Songs. Although the manuscript is undated, it’s probable that this version of the song, written by Joseph Mohr in 1818, was printed shortly after its composition by a Mr. Joseph Greis.

What is believed to be the oldest existing copy of the classic 19th century Christmas carol Silent Night has been discovered in an antiques shop in Vienna.
